Measuring earthquakes from optical satellite images.

چکیده
Système pour l'Observation de la Terre images are used to map ground displacements induced by earthquakes. Deformations (offsets) induced by stereoscopic effect and roll, pitch, and yaw of satellite and detector artifacts are estimated and compensated. Images are then resampled in a cartographic projection with a low-bias interpolator. A subpixel correlator in the Fourier domain provides two-dimensional offset maps with independent measurements approximately every 160 m. Biases on offsets are compensated from calibration. High-frequency noise (0.125 m(-1)) is approximately 0.01 pixels. Low-frequency noise (lower than 0.001 m(-1)) exceeds 0.2 pixels and is partially compensated from modeling. Applied to the Landers earthquake, measurements show the fault with an accuracy of a few tens of meters and yields displacement on the fault with an accuracy of better than 20 cm. Comparison with a model derived from geodetic data shows that offsets bring new insights into the faulting process.

Due to the effect of aerosols present in the atmosphere on the satellite images, the study of the effect of local aerosols distribution on the satellite images is important. On the other hand, the study shows that the effect of aerosols on the greenhouse gases and consequently on climate is also undeniable and as a result, this puts more emphasize on the necessity of this study. Lack of informa...

Traditional methods of field measurement of soil moisture in addition to the difficulty, the need for manpower and money and fail to take place on a large scale to be able to show moisture. Therefore, remote sensing has become a widespread use .Landsat 8 satellite data and Sentinel-1 radar satellite from Tehran were provided. 72 soil samples were taken at the same time by satellite passing from...
متن کاملMeasurement of Glacier Velocity Fields Using Very Precise Multitemporal Correlation on High Resolution Spot5 Images
Monitoring of ice velocity field is one of the key issues to glacier dynamics understanding. Surface velocity fields can provide useful information on phenomena such as glacier surges or ice fall. They can also reflect the effect of global warming on the dynamic of ice masses. Although the surface displacements of glaciers can be monitored locally with ground GPS points, this solution is diffic...

Automatically detecting geographical objects such as bridges, roundabouts or road crossings on highresolution satellite images is useful for keeping up to date geographical databases, automatically locating the imaging satellite at low cost, and easily and quickly assessing the extent of damages in case of natural disasters such as flooding or earthquakes. In addition, it may help in content-ba...

Some events on the Earth’s surface require a fast and well coordinated reaction, such as disasters like earthquakes, floods, the occurrence of drifting icebergs or illegal activities like piracy or cleaning of oil tankers polluting the sea. Field help and prompt intervention can be supported by the examination of images recently acquired by Earth observing satellites. The extraction of useful i...
